●かつて上野～札幌間を結んだ寝台特急「北斗星」は、登場後その人気が衰えず、列車増発による電源車不足を補うため、マニ50を改造したマニ24が増備されました。

●また、その当時は客車のうち開放B寝台客車であるオハネ25 とオハネフ25200が「北斗星」の編成に組み込まれていました。

●マニ24-500は24系と屋根形状をそろえるために飾り屋根が設置されていることが特徴で、またJR東日本が運用を持つ「出雲」に充当されることもあり、一両のみの存在ながら、北海道から山陰まで広くその姿を見ることができました。

●オハネ25、オハネフ25 200は客用扉が寒冷地に向けた引戸式に改造されているところが特徴です。
