~ 12系特快列車於1969年投入使用。其車身採用雙層單元窗設計，並以藍色車身搭配兩條白色條紋為特色。

~ JR東日本群馬車輛中心的12系列車主要用於各種活動列車，不僅在高崎地區廣泛使用，還外借至JR東日本其他路線。

~ Suhafu 12系列車149至163號車是該系列列車的最後加入。由於與50系列車共享部分零件，其車廂連接通道和後部觀景窗的形狀有所改變，外觀也因此有所不同。
