●205係是1984年問世的通勤列車。

●京葉線的205系於1989年全線開通至東京站時投入使用。

●首批投入京葉線營運的12輛205系，其基本規格與其他線路使用的0系205係相同，但車頭設計經過全新設計，14號車廂也換成了紅色，形像也發生了巨大變化。

●該車除了京葉線外，還直通外房線和內房線，因此可以應對中距離運行，最高時速可達110公里/小時，這是其一大特點。

●後來，與其他線路一樣安裝了裙板，2000年後，又增加了201系列和從山手線轉運的205系，使得列車陣容更加豐富。

●2010年，繼任者E233-5000系列問世。 205系列逐漸被該車取代，並被報廢或轉移到其他生產線。
