~ 789-0系列是JR北海道為八戶至函館之間的特快列車「超級白鳥」而開發的特快列車。該列車於2002年作為東北新幹線八戶支線開通後營運系統變革的一部分而新設。

~ 其高駕駛室、不銹鋼車身和舷梯後來被柴油機車KiHa 261-1000系列沿用，鋼製車頭被漆成綠色。

~ 最初，該列車採用3+2型五節車廂編組，在尖峰時段，在基本的五節車廂編組基礎上加裝三節獨立車廂。然而，後來列車編組進行了重新配置，增加了SAHA型車廂以及專用的KUHA型車廂和MOHA型車廂，最終形成了3+3型六節車廂編組，並增加了兩節車廂專用的附加編組。

~ 隨著北海道新幹線的開通，「超級白鳥號」列車停駛，789-0系列列車改裝為札幌與旭川之間的特快列車「紫丁香」號列車，並在車頭側面採用了與線路相關的設計，繼續運行。
