●與20系列臥舖車以後編組使用的客車相對，過去以單車形式使用的客車通常被稱為老式客車。其中許多列車在 JNR 時代結束時被廢棄，但有些列車被 JR 和私營鐵路接管用於活動。群馬車輛中心對舊乘用車進行了改造，例如使車門可以遠端鎖定。 
●2022年，Suhafu 42 2173號將改裝為休息車廂，Suhafu 42 2234號將塗成藍色，除Suhafu 32號和Ohani 36號外，內裝將改為木紋圖案。 
●目前主要用於JR東日本地區的專線列車，也可能運行在其他私人鐵路上。
