●205係是1984年首次投入營運的通勤列車。

●205係於1989年在南部線投入運營，取代了101系，當時共有16輛列車投入運營。

●隨後，隨著209系列的投入運營，一列列車被調往其他線路，使列車總數達到15列。從1996年開始，列車逐漸安裝了裙板。

●後來，205系列從山手線等其他線路調往其他線路，取代了舊款列車，由此衍生出同一系列的各種版本。

●在後期，205係被單臂受電弓取代，並作為快速列車運作。然而，隨著2014年繼任者E233-8000系的投入運營，205系便從南部線退役。
