●201係是日本國鐵首款採用電樞斬波控制的列車，其試製車於1979年問世。


●在節能效果得到驗證後，這款通勤列車於1981年開始量產。

●1982年，它取代了101系，在中央線和總武線投入營運。

●投入營運的201系列車為4節車廂及6節車廂的分離式列車，最終投入營運的列車數量為19列。

●之後，與中央線一樣，201系列車的連接側窗也安裝了防墜落罩，並在兩節車廂上安裝了裙板。

●2001年，隨著後續車型209-500系和E231系的投入運營，該列車被轉移到其他線路，並在中央線和總武線停止運營。
