~ DD51型柴油機車於1962年投入使用，是當時日本的標準柴油機車，除四國以外，日本其他地區均有使用。

~ DD51型機車的配置會根據生產年份而有所不同，例如駕駛室頂部的風扇罩有無以及側面過濾器的形狀等。

~ 該型機車根據其運行地區的氣候條件進行了相應的配置。在北海道運行的DD51型機車配備了除雪犁、旋轉車窗和汽笛罩，以增強其耐寒和抗雪性能。

~ 日本國鐵私有化後，DD51型機車併入JR北海道。為了配合臥舖特快列車「北斗星號」的開通，該型機車被重新塗裝成帶有金色星形標誌的藍色。

~ 它曾以雙機牽引的方式牽引「北斗星號」、「暮光特快」和「仙后座號」等臥舖特快列車，也曾單獨牽引其他特快列車和專列。

~ 然而，隨著臥舖特快「卡西奧佩亞號」和特快「濱奈須」號於2016年停運，該型機車也隨之退役。

~ 北海道塗裝的DD51型機車在1990年代初之前短暫服役，但它曾作為50系51型機車的首機，用於在宗谷本線運營的普通客運列車以及海灘季期間的特快列車。
